How to find blog topics that people are searching for

You can use Google to help find keywords, sentences and terms that people are searching for, so that your blogs have a better chance of ranking high and being found by your target audience.

Today I want to share with you how to find topics, headings and subheadings for your blog posts to increase traffic to your website. An important thing to consider when you write a blog is that you want to use that piece of content to drive as much traffic to your website as possible.

Blog post length

One of the ways to drive traffic to your website is to write long blog posts, a minimum of 2,000 words, you could even write three to four thousand words. I probably wouldn't go any longer than that, but 2,000 words would do the job.

Blog Post Topics

Think about what kind of topic you want to write about. Remember your topic needs to be related to what you do, what you sell, either a service or products, and not be too broad as well.

If you sell several services or products you want to write about one of them per blog post. That's a great way to help your audience to trust you and to remove barriers to purchase.

Google your topic

As an example, if you are an interior designer or stylist you can Google “how to renovate your kitchen”, or "tips to renovate your kitchen" or “how to design a kitchen”.

Keep it broad at first and you can go with whatever topics you have in your mind. Google will then bring you the results for your search, and that will include terms (entire sentences) that other people are searching for, related to your topic of choice.

Looking at those results you can:

1.       See what other people wrote about

2.       Produce a list of topics and ideas

3.       Find out what other search terms people use when they want to know more about the topic you have in mind.

Google will also show you what “people also asked" - those are the exact terms that other people are using to search, for example:

“what are the different types of kitchen layout?”

“What is a ten-by-ten kitchen layout?”

“How do you build a kitchen?“

“What is a good-sized kitchen?” and so on.

Using the Google information

Let's go back to our first topic, “tips to renovate your kitchen”. When you scroll down in Google you can see what people were searching for. And that's the kind of topics, headings and subheadings that you want to use in your blog posts because now you know that there are enough people searching for those specific terms. Otherwise Google wouldn’t list them.

What I like to do is to list as many as possible (clicking in Google can sometime open more search terms) and see how they can go together. Sometimes you can't group them all in one blog post. But the idea is that you can use some of those terms as subheadings for your blog.

Topics, headings and sub headings

Choose a topic, search your topic on google, list all the terms your find and then decide on which terms you can use as subheadings. Preferably you want to have five to ten subheadings in your blog posts and each subheading is a term that people are searching for, which is going to help you rank higher.

This will also help you plan your content in advance and define your blog topics. Need a hand to plan your content for best results? Grab my free Content Planner here.
